NUCLEAR POWER
NOT WORTH THE RISK
NEWS 174 - JULY 2011
By way of comparison, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster that occurred in 1986 in the Ukraine, Russia- heretofore the worst nuclear disaster on record- burned for 10 days and cumulatively killed an estimated 1 million people worldwide. The Fukushima, Japan nuclear disaster has 5 nuclear reactors burning, 2 in partial meltdown and 3 in full meltdown- and they've ALL been uncontrollably burning since March 11th. Its been over 3 months and this nuclear disaster remains completely out of control. In fact, some industry estimates cite the possibility that these meltdowns will be contained (optimistically) in 1-3 years, at the very earliest.
The amount and intensity of the radioactive fallout from this particular nuclear disaster will assuredly kill hundreds of millions of people worldwide over time. Japan itself is, of course, the epicentre of this radioactive contamination that has spread out from these reactors.
However, the Korean peninsula, China and nations immediately surrounding the Japanese archipelago will also bear the brunt of a significant amount of radioactive fallout from this disaster. Immediately downwind of this radioactive release, though, is the United States of America and the entire northern hemisphere, comprising the majority of the world's industrialized nations on Earth. Significant amounts of plutonium, strontium, caesium, uranium and a whole plethora of other highly radioactive particles have already fallen on the continental land mass of the USA and have already entered the food chains and water tables of the nation.
Radiation kills, and thanks to the recent Fukushima disaster in Japan, the REAL story is that a literal nuclear holocaust is unfolding right before us in America and throughout the world. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), the federal environmental safety agency arm of the US government has shut down nearly all of its radiation detection monitors in the USA for fear that the American people will learn the TRUTH that a lethal dose of radioactive fallout has now descended upon the nation.

THE WRITING IS ON THE WALL: IMPERATIVE TO CLOSE DOWN ALL NUCLEAR PLANTS NOW AND NOT BUILD ANY MORE
There is, of course, an alternative way forward of generating electricity: a crash programme of safe, non-polluting sources of renewable energy: wind, wave, tidal, solar, biomass, coupled with energy conservation and energy efficiency. The choice is ours, citizens: help us make it correctly.
NUCLEAR FREE LOCAL AUTHORITIES RESPONSE TO HEAD OF THE N.I.I. (MIKE WEIGHTMAN’S) INTERIM NUCLEAR SAFETY REVIEW. POST FUKOSHIMA
NFLA Chair Bailie George Regan says:
"The NFLA believes Mike Weightman's interim report is a real missed opportunity. The NFLA has consistently said it is disappointed with the very narrow nature of this review, which it feels is being developed to ensure little actually has to be done. This then allows no great delay to the nuclear new build timetable - the real desire of ministers which the regulator clearly does not want to significantly affect in my view. It is time for a much broader and open review before we make fundamental decisions on future energy use following this disaster. Germany, Japan and many other countries are taking this form of action to Fukoshima - it is about time we did the same. I don't want bland reassurances; I want a fundamental and critical analysis of the risks of nuclear power following Fukoshima."
THE DISGRACED SIZEWELL STAKEHOLDER GROUP
At its quarterly meeting in public on 2nd June, the SSG (led by its Chairman, Richard Smith) disgraced itself by voting to prevent members of the public - in the public slot - from raising their concerns over the Japanese Fukoshima nuclear disaster, despite vocal protests by your Chairman and member Peter Lanyon: what a corrupt outfit it is! Luckily the Press were there to record the SSG's disgraceful behaviour.
^JUSTIFICATION; APPLICATION FOR A JUDICIAL REVIEW AGAINST THE GOVERNMENTS PLANS FOR NEW NUCLEAR REACTORS; AN UPDATE
Readers of News 173 (May, 2011) will know that we contributed £2,000 to the exorbitant requirement of £16,250 made by the Government's Legal Services Commission in order that Rory Walker's application for legal aid to proceed against the Government could continue. [Rory's action showed that the health detriments from nuclear power outweigh any economic, social and other so-called benefits].
We are pleased to say £17,000 odd was raised just in time by concerned citizens, thus enabling Rory's case to proceed. His application was reviewed on 12 May by Mr Justice McCombe who, regrettably, rejected it as "unarguable". However, Rory's lawyers have appealed against McCombe's judgement: the appeal will be held on 7th July. We wish Rory and his lawyers success: the matter is of vital concern to all citizens. The grounds for Rory's appeal are available to all Campaign members at Tudor House.
