Japan Ready To Restart Nuclear Power Plants

The Japanese government is to restart the nation’s ageing 48 nuclear power plants a hugely controversial move after the disaster – at Fukushima (Lucy Alexander writes). Defying public opinion, the ruling Liberal Democratic party of Shinzo Abe has put through parliament a new energy plan that describes the plants as “an important base load power source”. It is a complete reversal of the strategy adopted in 2012 by the previous administration, which promised to phase out nuclear power within 25 years . More than three quarters of Japanese still support the phasing out of nuclear power, according to a newspaper poll last month.
