Whitehall’s problems

There are so many very good arguments for no more nuclear power stations of any sort to be built, that there must be a good reason for Rolls Royce to produce fantasies like this SMR of theirs (left), that might get washed up on any convenient shore near you – particularly since the famous firm is carefully winding down many of its other nuclear enterprises, (except of course the Trident submarine connection).

Could the so-called nuclear deterrent be important enough for the government to keep a whole industry going so well past its sell-by date? If you factor in the seat at the UN high table that comes with the bomb, it just might. If there was also a never-mentioned but ever-present pressure from across the Atlantic for us to keep the technology going (or else!), then there’s an awkward and awfully expensive social problem that the government can never talk about.
