Britain’s taxpayers will be landed with a bill of more than £ 100bn for cleaning up radioactive waste from sites such as Sellafield and Dounreay, according to the chief executive of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). The amount represents a near- doubling of the £56bn cost announced when the NDA began operating in 2005, and could rise still more, “The total provision for the task of cleaning up Britain’s nuclear legacy is now more than £ 1OObn, and it will take at least 120 years” said John Clarke, CEO of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA ). The figures mean the cost of the cleanup now bears comparison with the total value of the electricity produced by atomic power stations.
